Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Out House

It's always, always, always flat and currentless because it's in a sheltered part of a large natural harbor. There are nearby phones, other dive-vans, and bathrooms. Visibility is low-ish for the area. Sea life (corals, animals, and plants) are at a real minimum for the island. This is an extremely popular spot for dive shops to conduct Open Water SCUBA dives, perhaps because it's completely predictable, safe and lacks distractions. On the other hand, you'd be bored silly here once you're certified and looking for an exciting fun dive. Preferable places for fun-dives are Finger Reef, Piti Bombhole, Gun Beach and nearby Family Beach. Drive 30 minutes along the island's ring-road from Tumon Bay (the tourist area) past the big city (Hagatnya) to the largest bay on the island, where the US navy base and major shipping warehouses are. Do NOT speed on this road, because it's a favorite site for speed traps. Take the road leading to the warehouses and shipping docks, and go PAST them to almost-the-end-of-the-road. If you go to the end of the road you'll be at a nice sandy white beach (with no dive-vans) called "Family Beach". This ain't that. This is a gravelly grey beach on the left, crowded with dive-vans. You'll know you're in the right place if you're surrounded by dive shops' vans with Open Water SCUBA students and dive-floats.

This is not a bad dive, but totally predictable and subject to long periods of absolutely nothing going on, as compared to Family Beach up the road, which has a surprising amount of fish. I have no reason to doubt C. Gobin above that this is a great site for underwater photography once you know where all the interesting animals are located, since the animals are so used to hapless OW student divers wallowing about. However, for an experienced diver who isn't familiar with the site and wants to be able to jump in the water, swim along and look at stuff, this site is a bit of bore. Still it's wet, is diveable even in the worst conditions outside the harbor, and the port is, from rumor, less likely to stop you here than at Family Beach. It's better than nothing and divers who aren't used to tropical diving will likely find it a blast.

I am quite surprised that people don't dive here more… It is a scuba training site which I used a lot for open water classes and it is ideal for teaching a rescue class. Most of the training dives I did there lasted 45 min to 1 hour and we had a great dive. I have some very good pictures of the life on the bottom. There are usually octopus, stone fish, farmer fish, eel and other life living in the outcroppings of coral. They are predictable and are in the same place for every dive. Granted, there is not a lot, but some of my best pictures have come from here. Night diving is not an option - the port is closed at night and no diving after 5pm is allowed. Of course, if you dove Gun on a bad day and didn't see anything, you would give it a bad review. My advice - dive it with someone who knows the site…
