On 12th February 1941 at 0200, while anchored at Malta, MAORI was attacked from the air and a bomb found its way into her Engine and Gear Room. The Tribal blew up and sank, still moored at the emergency destroyer buoy at the entrance to Dockyard Creek. Crews from other ships helped in the rescue work as blazing oil spread across the water. Since off-duty personnel customarily slept ashore in shelters while in Malta, only one man was killed in the attack. At daybreak, MAORI'S forepart still showed above the water and the wreck seriously interfered with shipping movements but it was decided to leave her there for the time being. Her 'A' and 'B' guns were still in good order so it was suggested that those guns be mounted on the Ricassoli Breakwater for the Army's use. Bombs still fell on MAORI during succeeding air attacks. By the end of 1942, the Admiralty decided that her wreck should be lifted, moved out of Grand Harbour and set down off Sliema. On the 5th July 1945, MAORI'S hulk was scuttled finally in deep water far away from the harbour. HMS Maori is also known as Maori.

Ras il Hobz is just across from Fessej rock and is a has not been dived a lot until recently. It is a pinnacle rising out of 50m to approximately 9m sometimes swept by a current. The boat anchors at the top of the pinnacle and the dive is performed by diving to your max depth and ascending in a spiral around the pinnacle. In common with a lot of dive of this type, Jacks and Dentex and free swimming Morays are common sights, Crayfish and crabs are to be found in the cracks, along with various types of corals. You can reach there even more than 85 m. But the most interesting part is 10m - 25m . There is a little bay on the west side of ras il-hobs with an old slipway where you can make your decostop an easily get out. By boat or by car. Use paved road east of the sewage treatment plant. You get to the shore. Walk over the covered canal to the top of the little peninsula. Here you can get in the water. Ras il-Hobs is just 30 m in front of you in the open sea. Ras Il-Hobz is also known as Middlefinger.

It allowes for safe boat anchorage and is a perfect location to do a safety decompression stop, since this is a deep dive around the wall of the reef platform. Nudibranchs and lobsters can be encountered in between the boulders which dot the area. Shoals of damselfish, small groups of bream, a few grouper, lobster and parrotfish will be seen here. The walls are covered with algae, bristle worms, sea urchins and lots of starfish. This site is situated under the highest cliffs in Gozo. Easy access by boat, but a shore dive can also be done here by jumping off the cliff near the Ta' Cenc hotel. A steel ladder will provide a way back up.
