Grand Blue

#11 - Grand Blue

200m offshore from Kewalo Boat Harbor, right in front of Kakaako Park. This is a point where even beginners can enjoy themselves with peace of mind. However, July to September is summer swell (surf season), so check it out. The condition usually recovers in 2-3 days. Although this point is not very deep, it is far offshore, and compared to other points, it is less affected by waves, and the transparency is good even if there are some waves. There are three long and narrow leaves from north to south. Near the beginning of the reef, Hawaiian Diving Photo Dassilas (endemic species) and Miledseed Butterflyfish (endemic species), which resemble three-star damselfish, gather in groups. There is a hollow under the reef, which is slightly higher, and there are schools of red pine scaly and hosekikintoki that prefer the shade of the rocks. If you go offshore and explore the reefs, you can meet the Frame Angel (left photo) near the intersection of the first and second reefs. They move quickly in and out of rock shadows, so if you don't observe them with a wide field of view, you'll miss them. Flame angels are not an endemic species, but they are characterized by a much darker red color than those from other regions. Due to overfishing, their numbers have decreased, and now they are rare and valuable. Diving photo From this point onwards, the density of the coral becomes high, and the transparency becomes outstandingly good. At that moment, I see a strange sight. "Are the corals eating the bottles?" In fact, the corals are probably growing around the bottles that have somehow sunk into the water. The 3rd reef is a little further away and sandy on the way. It's close to the boat passage (boat channel) so it's strictly prohibited to float! This reef has the most fish shadows, yellow snapper, milred seed butterfly fish, domino damzo, red pine, red mullet, etc... Sometimes a baby white tip shark rests in the hole. However, it takes a long time to swim to this point, making it difficult to observe carefully.
