Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Willow Springs Park
Willow Springs Park is a lovely little scuba park on Millards Quarry Pond with tons of sunken attractions like cars, trains, boats, and other goodies. Water is COLD! Viz is usually about 10-20 feet at best. If you are familiar with Dutch Springs Scuba Park then you get the idea. Nice facilities, heated bathrooms, full service dive shop, swimming area, ramp for handicapped divers. From the Willow Springs web site: "Over 600,000 divers have safely certified with us at Willow Springs Park. You are invited to join them at one of the finest diving facilities in the Northeast. You'll find that we have designed the park specifically for your convenience and safety, with dozens of attractive features" All Divers: $20.00 a day, Non Divers: $6.00. Night Diving $10.00 by special arrangement. No Boats, No Pets. Season Passes Available ($140.00) Passes good March 1, 2005 to Feb. 28, 2006. Enjoyable time practicing limited visibility diving and some light salvage in limited visibility. Good place for such practice.

I have dived this site more than 250 times, all times of the year. Visibility is best in the spring just before the algae bloom and in the fall just after the algae bloom. All sorts of fish life can be found -- trout, perch, pickerel, bluegill, bass -- but the real treat is the freshwater eels, all female, which some come into freshwater after being born in the Sargasso Sea. The quarry also has the usual things placed in it to interest divers: boats, fire truck, airplane, an old wooden sailing ship, a railroad caboose, a milk truck and several cars.

I was certified here in 1995. I remember the conditions were much better. I think there is a new owner who charges people to fish here. When you are swimming along at 3-5 feet vis the only things you can see are snagged lines and hooks in your wetsuit. They're brochure boasts 20+ feet vis. I asked the new owner for a refund after diving for 10 minutes in disappointment. He said NO. There was no one else diving that day and everyone I know tells me to stay clear of that waste of money. You want good quarry diving go to Dutch Springs. It's not far from Willow.

While Willow Springs doesn't boast the same reliable 30-50 ft visibility that some other local quarries have, it does feature really nice facilities and a full scuba shop. Plus, if you have non-divers in your group they can enjoy the brisk swimming area. Entry into the water is very easy and depths average 30-40 ft. The water is cold, I had 49 degrees at 39 feet in the summer. The visibility was maybe 5 ft but all the attractions were linked together with rope so navigation is easy as long as you have basic compass skills and the map to the various sunken cars and trucks. Viz was so bad at one point that we were on the deck of a boat and didn't realize what it was until we poked around. A great place for low viz practice and to get wet when waiting for a Coz fix. Watch the bottom. It's silty and thick. Great facilities with a full service shop with rentals and sales. Have fun!
