Grey nurse sharks are found here all year round. The numbers vary according to their lifecycle and the largest numbers are always seen from Spring through to Autumn. During the winter months we get to see the humpback whale migration; manta rays can be seen at any time of the year but are more prevalent outside of the warmer months. During those summer months we are joined by the leopard sharks and we see eagle rays and giant Queensland grouper all year round. Apart from that we see three different species of turtle, schools of pelagic and we also have all the little stuff like nudibranchs, colourful tropical fish, hard and soft corals, octopus, moray eels, sea snakes and so on.

Ocean Free + Ocean Freedom – Cairns Premier Reef & Island Tours are locally owned and operated by husband and wife team - Perry Jones and Taryn Agius. Perry has been in the dive industry in Cairns and managing dive operations on four vessels since 1988 including Ocean Free since 1992 when he met Taryn. They both worked the boats since then and purchased Ocean Free (a 16.5M schooner) in 1996. This company offers two personal Great Barrier Reef day tours departing from Cairns - Ocean Free offers a 25-guest sail, exclusive Great Barrier Reef site and Green Island experience and Ocean Freedom, an un-rushed six hours of reef time on two unique and wonderful Great Barrier Reef sites – “Wonder Wall”, on outer edge of Upolu Reef, and Upolu Cay reef with its crystal clear turquoise waters. Suitable for all Divers and Snorkelers, the intimate Coral Sea Dreaming liveaboard is your personal Dive and Sail tour to the best diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Traveling to the Outer Reef, guests will be transported in comfort on this unique sailing vessel. Dive depths will range from 5 to 28 meters and Divers and Snorkelers will experience vibrant Coral Gardens, amazing biodiversity including Turtles, small Reef Sharks and Schools of Pelagics. The 52 foot (16 meter) liveaboard sailing vessel Coral Sea Dreaming is a unique yacht, designed to traverse the Great Barrier Reef in all kinds of weather. Her custom features provide comfort and convenience for diving and snorkeling on her 2 day/1 night excursions. The Coral Sea Dreaming’s 3 English speaking crew offer personalized attention. 12 passengers are accommodated in air conditioned private cabins which include single bunks, and a quad share. The intimate environment of the boat requires guests to bring the minimum as storage space is limited. Guests are asked to bring an overnight pack on-board. Luggage can be stored at the office. The boat is equipped with 2 toilets, a separate hot water shower as well as a fresh water shower on the stern of the boat.

Between dives on this amazing dive safari aboard Coral Sea Dreaming, guests will relax and enjoy the breathtaking Australian vistas. Guests enjoy unlimited water time as they can snorkel right off the boat. Take a nap on the shaded sun deck, being gently rocked by the ocean waves, or work on your tan in the abundant sunshine.

Great food is standard aboard Coral Sea Dreaming. A well supplied galley will provide guests with three hearty meals a day served in the ship’s comfortable dining area. Heron Island is known the world over for its excellent Great Barrier Reef dive sites. We have 20 sites to explore on the Heron and Wistari Reefs, only minutes away from the jetty.

The waters around Heron Island are relatively shallow (avg depth 10-15 metres) and are teeming with reef fish, turtles, reef sharks, and an endless variety of marine invertebrates. Mantas are typically seen in winter. Green turtles nest on the island from November to April.
