Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Kamaole 2
Another fairly wide sandy beach, the Maui Banyan sits on the end of this beach. While they like to tout it as “one of the finest beaches on Maui”, that claim is a bit exaggerated. What they don’t share in the glossy literature is that after large Kona storms, the sand can temporarily be removed by the ocean leaving rounded lava rock (resembling river rocks, except black.) In fact, the old-time Hawai’ian name for this beach (you know, from the folks that weren’t trying to sell you a condo) is “Ili’iliholo”, which literally means “running pebbles.” (Salesman bashing aside, most days of the year this is still a pretty nice beach!)

Take your pick of several entry spots.
The coral around the point is more interesting than the beach area.

Came here 3 times. The first 2 times, nice waves for boogie boarding. Snorkeled on S end first day against the rocks/reef. Saw some decent sealife. The second time, snorkeled on the North end, and it was much better, about 20-30 ft deep, so easy to float above the reef and see tons of fish. close enough to swim down for a closer look. The reef is HUGE.
The third day, high winds, lots of riptides, heavy shore break, was getting occassional 5-6 ft waves. Too rough to snorkel. Awesome boogie boarding.
Great for the kids. Not too crowded. Always seemed to be plenty of street parking. Had a blast.

Some rocks, but we wore surf shoes which helped. Near the rocks was a great place to snorkel !

Snorkeled the reef to the left, which had lots of fish and a sea turtle. Didn't see anybody jumping in the water from the rocks, but watched out for them anyway. Best in the morning as the waves picked up the visibility was considerably reduced. Easy entry and exit, good shower and rest room facilities, near stores and dive shops if you need anything from them.

This is a great site with neat channels in the reefs to dive in. I saw lots of turtles and a barracuda. I suggest going off to the reef on the left (the one shown in the middle photo below). This was a lot of fun diving in; just watch out for people jumping off the rocks (don't want them to land on you). Fun and easy spot to dive.

I liked this dive because it was easy and relaxing -- that's just the way I like to dive. My husband likes to rough it, so wasn't too impressed. Lots of great facilities here, and perfect for a day on the beach!

Nice easy dive, good for night, but is very shallow. Best stuff we found was the reef along the small rock point separating Kamaole #2 & #3. Found several sleeping turtles under some rock ledges, and a few spiny lobsters. Did not see many fish at night, except for a few puffers.

Lots of checkout dives are done here so it's a very good spot for beginner divers to get out there without many concerns. There are restrooms and outside showers for rinsing off afterwards. I sort of came away without great feelings here, BUT, when I compare it to my diving spots in Oregon, there isn't a comparison.
