Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Sasamat Lake

For something completely different, try White Pine Beach at Sasamat Lake! This is an easy lake dive, perfect for the beginner or for taking your new gear out for a maiden voyage. The family will enjoy the white sand beach and facilities. From South of Vancouver's Second Narrows Bridge, head East on 7A for about 14km, parallel the Burrard Inlet. Wrap around Port Moody by taking a left on Ioco Road. In 4.5km, take a right on 1st Ave, and in 0.7km turn left on Bedwell Bay Road. You'll see the entrance in 3km.

The only hazard of the entry is tripping over the kids! The area is perfect for relaxing.

We have been diving all week long at different sites: Porteau Cove, Whytcliff and Buntzen Lake, this by far was the most enjoyable dive. Vis was excellent, about 5 meters; compare that to a few feet in the ocean dives, we were really happy. Bottom of the lake is a bit weird. Whatever that stuff, black, silty slush, seems bottomless. This was an excellent place for us to practice how to deploy our SMB. Buoyancy control practice, absent were the strong ocean current messing us up.

The viz was amazing, but there was nothing to see, just mud and discarded beer cans. At 40 to 45 feet there is a drastic thermo change. On the plus there was no boat traffic and no surf or current or tides to contend with. Makes for a good first fresh water dive or to try out any changes to your normal dive gear setup ( Ex. next time I'll use my dry suit).

If you've just been in Indian arm, consider this a great way to get your equipment rinsed! Not much to see, but check for hidden treasures (other than beer cans) to pass the time. No safety stops required - bottom extends a long way from beach at depths no greater than 35'/10m.

Longish walk down to the shore from parking; it's a pain the butt to bring gear back up. As far as scenery, it's fantastic if you like mud. Other than that, it might be cool for looking for stuff that people dropped into the lake around the dock area.
