Gunbarrel

The legendary 'Gunbarrel' – Not for first timers! An adrenalin dive for the first part of the dive as you fly through an underwater canyon, herding the schools of snapper and surgeon fish through the narrow underwater gorge. Graceful grey reef and white tip sharks glide up and down the walls through all the swirling fish. The canyon then opens up to an underwater beach where the current suddenly stops and we pause and wait for the sharks to return single file past us back into the channel. Then a short swim through takes us out into the clear blue of the Pacific. The second half of the dive is very different – a leisurely meander over hard coral gardens and though a long, sunlit tunnel with a wavy sandy floor, before we drift up through the sun pierced blue to surface by the boat. Always dived on an incoming current. Enter where the channel opens to the open ocean, drift with the current. Large schools of barracuda and trevally are found near the beginning where the channel is nearly 100 feet deep. Towards the top of the channel it forks. Grab a rock at "the bleachers" on the right side of the main channel where it forks to the right. Hang out here at 60 feet to watch the grey reef sharks circling. Keep an eye out for hammerheads and manta rays coming through. Be careful leaving here, as the channel rapidly becomes only 15 feet deep and the current will try to push you shallow quickly. Check out the lagoon wall which slopes from 15 feet down to hundreds. A channel through the fringing reef of Gau Island into the lagoon. Dive from liveaboard
